Hold onto your green bubbles, iPhone users! Apple just dropped the news we've all been waiting for – RCS messaging is on the horizon for iPhones in 2024. 🚀 Brace yourselves for a messaging revolution that's about to make those blue and green texts even more interesting.

Illustration of a blue iMessage bubble selected to have its color changed by a digital color picker picking up the color green, to show the pressure on Apple to open up iMessage.

In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple spokesperson Jacqueline Roy spilled the beans, "Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association." Translation: your iMessage world is about to get a splash of green! 🌈 But fear not, iMessage lovers; Apple promises that iMessage will still be the crème de la crème of messaging experiences.

So, what's the hype around RCS messaging? Get ready for encryption, read receipts, typing indicators, high-res images, and videos – all the bells and whistles you've been longing for when texting your Android pals. Apple's even throwing in location sharing in text threads because, well, why not?

But wait, there's a twist. RCS messages will be green on iPhones. Yes, you read that right – green! Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that this is not a glitch; it's a feature. A colorful departure from the familiar blue, courtesy of RCS.

But why the sudden change of heart? Rumor has it; it's the EU's Digital Markets Act applying a bit of pressure. Apple, under scrutiny, is making its services play nice with other platforms. Google, Samsung, and even Nothing (yes, a company named Nothing) have been nudging Apple to join the RCS party. Green bubbles, unite!

However, don't expect iMessage to start mingling with other platforms. This move is more about replacing SMS and MMS while keeping iMessage as the cool kid on the messaging block. Apple's not doing this out of sheer willingness, but hey, we're not complaining.

Google's Hiroshi Lockheimer summed it up best, "Everybody should have secure and modern messaging without worrying what kind of phone they’re texting to. So glad to see Apple joining our ongoing work with the GSMA on RCS to make texting better for all!" We couldn't agree more, Hiroshi!

In a nutshell, Apple's got a green makeover planned for your messages. It may not be out of sheer generosity, but it's undoubtedly a welcome change for anyone who's dealt with the quirks of texting between iPhones and Androids. Get ready for a greener, more colorful messaging future, iPhone users! 🍏💬
